Bikes May Pass!

The other day I was riding toward work, through a construction zone, and all the cars were stopped and waiting for the construction worker to spin the sign from STOP to SLOW.  But then the worker turned to me and said, "Bikes can go..."  while all the cars had to wait!

Your interpretations of this event are welcome...

Either he was a cyclist himself or was knowingly sending you into peril that you obviously avoided. Then again, bikes don't take up the whole lane like a car so he probably figured you could make it regardless. Interesting.

Perhaps he is from Amsterdam, and just naturally gives cyclists priority.

Muahahaha! Victory is thine!

You know, perhaps if we required more state officials to be from Amsterdam we would find more space for cycling!

Car and their drivers present a danger to street maintenance and construction workers. They don't always listen and follow directions in their hast to get from point A to point B, posing a hazard to people working construction sites. Bicyclists, however, present little threat. I for one am more worried about getting flattened by a large construction vehicle on a site so I wait and make eye contact with the flag waver so that I know for sure what I am being directed to do. I do the same thing when police officer is directing traffic at a broken light or accident site.
